MIQ Logistics, a global organisation with a rapidly growing interest and investment in the marine sector, has this week announced major financial backing and operational support for the J/80 UK Class in addition to a long-term partnership with Key Yachting Ltd as their preferred logistics partner for 2012.

Competitors at The MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM, which will take place in Dartmouth in June, will enjoy significant and tangible benefits as a direct result of MIQ’s investment in the event in addition to that of SLAM UK. The intention of both MIQ and SLAM is to deliver the kind of support for the regatta which will directly benefit the eighty or so teams which are predicted to take part.

MIQ Logistics’ Director James Clarke said ‘We are enormously excited about our partnership with the J/80 UK Class and with Key Yachting. The International J/80 fleet features some of the most highly skilled sailors, Olympians, National and World Champions from numerous racing classes all around the world. We understand the huge responsibility that comes with our investment but the opportunity to be involved with the J/80 Class and the World Championship was one that we could not ignore: it demonstrates and cements our commitment to the marine sector. We are a trusted partner to a number of professional and amateur racing teams and serve a wide range of global yacht brokers and individuals. Our dedicated marine division has extensive global coverage. The MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM will be an awesome event and we are thrilled that MIQ’s support will help to set it apart from other regattas’.

‘The sponsor support for the MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM is fantastic’ said Terry Palmer, Chairman of the J/80 UK Class Association. It’s a credit to the J/80 Class and to the sport of sailing in general. The foresight and vision of our sponsors means that we are now able to deliver an event which people will remember and talk about for years.’

In recent years Spanish J/80 sailors have reigned supreme at the World Championships and the last five J/80 World Champions have hailed from Spain. However, with the MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM being co-hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club (the yacht club of Britannia Royal Naval College) and the Royal Dart Yacht Club, the UK fleet is determined that the World Championship title will be retained in home waters this year.

Building on their sponsorship of the J/80 UK Nationals in 2011, Baltic Wharf (a full service boat yard in Totnes, at the top of the River Dart) has stepped up to the mark with yet more investment for the Worlds, precisely targeted to improve the racing credentials of the UK J/80 fleet. The Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme, in association with First Class Nautical (another Dartmouth based firm) will enable UK competitors to train in Dartmouth this spring, in the waters where world championship races will be won and lost. Jim Saltonstall, the UK’s most renowned and successful racing coach will be putting the Baltic Wharf squad through their paces in advance of World Championship by way of the most intensive coaching programme that the UK J/80 Class has ever enjoyed.

Nick Haigh (a familiar name in UK sailing circles with vast experience ranging from Lark dinghies to his most recent DK46 yacht) will be sailing his new J/80 with his wife Annie and the current SB3 World Champion Geoff Carveth. Nick explained ‘Geoff has campaigned J/80s before and when he called me to suggest putting a team together, I could not resist. Annie and I live in South Devon and The MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM will be raced in our home waters. We are fully revved up and ready to go with our new boat, Slightly Steamy.’ For Carveth, of course, the J/80 Worlds represent unfinished business…

Elsewhere in Europe, the USA and Asia other Nationals teams are also deep in preparation for the 2012 event. Ignacio Camino Rodriguez is the skipper the J/80 ‘Nextel Engineering’ and is the current J/80 World Champion having won the 2011 event in Denmark. He said this week ‘I have raced in all five J/80 world championships since 2007 and I have now won the title twice. The 2012 World Championship in the UK this summer is not to be missed. We Spanish are looking forward to a great event in Dartmouth with a really strong entry list, tight competition, sound organisation and superb sponsor support from MIQ Logistics and SLAM. We also hope that the weather will be good!’

The MIQ Logistics 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM will take place between the 9th and 15th of June and the J/80 International Class is buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Further information can be found online at www.j80worlds2012.com and entries for the event can also be made via the website.

I am delighted to report that we have now finalised the long awaited Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme in Association with First Class Nautical. I would like to extend thanks to all those who have been instrumental in making this happen: Baltic Wharf, First Class Nautical, Darthaven Marina, The Royal Dart Yacht Club and of course our erstwhile coach Jim Saltonstall.

Four training weekends are planned for the UK fleet after Easter. They will include coaching for the fleet, tuning, boat handling practice, race work with the Race Management team for the Worlds and plenty of really good sailing.

The date and venue of each weekend are as follows:

Weekend 1: 28th & 29th April – Solent – to coincide with the final weekend of the Warsash Spring Championship

Weekend 2: 12th & 13th May – Dartmouth

Weekend 3: 19th & 20th May – Dartmouth

Weekend 4: 26th & 27th May – Dartmouth

The Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme is precisely that: A coaching programme which will be led by Jim Saltonstall. It’s a series of training weekends designed to offer those skippers and crews who take part a real step up in performance in advance of the Worlds and a chance to learn the waters in which the regatta will be fought. One of the two final weekends will take place with the PRO and the full race team in attendance.

Weekend 1 will be run on the Solent, to coincide with the Warsash Spring Championships and I am very pleased to confirm that the Race Committee are happy for Jim to be out on the water with his video camera. As this is a Race Weekend, there will not be any ‘coaching’ per se during the racing, but those skippers and crew who have signed up to the programme will enjoy Jim’s usual advice and comment between races and of course his video de-brief after racing each day.

After Weekend 1, the Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme will move to Dartmouth. Boats will need to be delivered to Baltic Wharf’s yard in Totnes, at the top of the River Dart where they will be stored ashore. You will need to drop your boat in to the yard (on the weekend of the 5th & 6th May?), put the rig up and put the sails and equipment onboard that you will need for the coaching the following weekend.

After this, your boat will then be launched on your behalf at Baltic Wharf before each training weekend and towed down the river to Dartmouth for you by our friends at First Class Nautical and will then be berthed in Darthaven Marina (where boats were kept during the Nationals) for the duration of the weekend.

Your J/80 will be ready and waiting for you to step on board on your arrival in Dartmouth for Weekend 2 on Friday night or Saturday morning.

You will train on Saturday and Sunday, and you will have your de-briefing after each session at the Royal Dart Yacht Club. Then, after sailing on Sunday, you will simply step off your boat and First Class Nautical will return her for you to Baltic Wharf where she will be lifted ashore once more.

The process will be repeated for the following two weekends of the programme.

The Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme is precisely that: a programme, and as such I will only accept bookings for the whole series rather than for individual weekends. Equally, in order to ensure that the coaching is as effective for us Brits as it can possibly be, it is only open to UK boats and numbers are limited in line with advice I have been given by Jim Saltonstall, who, lets face it, knows his onions.

The price for the Baltic Wharf J/80 Training Programme, including all marina costs in Dartmouth, your boats being towed up and down the river and the coaching is £730 plus VAT per boat.

If you stack this against your dry sail costs here on the Solent I think you will find that it compares most favourably.

As I said, I have a limit on the numbers of places on the programme and these will be allocated on a first come first to pay basis. Please call me on the telephone number below with your credit card details and I will book your space.

Telephone: 023 8045 669

SLAM UK has this week confirmed major sponsorship support for the 2012 J/80 World Championship, which will now be Powered by SLAM. The regatta will take place between the 9th and 15th of June and will be jointly hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club, the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the J/80 UK Class Association. Both the Opening Ceremony and the Prizegiving Ceremony for 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM will take place at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.

In addition to significant financial support for the regatta, the partnership with cutting edge sportswear company SLAM UK will bring style, flair and inimitable glamour to the event, along with real and quantifiable added value for the competitors of the 80 teams which are predicted to travel to the UK this summer to compete. Not only will competitors be able to enjoy the tangible benefits of SLAM UK’s investment in the Championship, but they will also witness first-hand the competitive edge afforded on the race-track by this technologically advanced clothing range; Chris Ducker, Owner of SLAM UK, will also be racing his brand new J/80 at the Worlds.

Chris Ducker explained his passion for SLAM and his commercial desire to be involved at a grass roots level with the J/80 Worlds: ‘I am delighted to have an opportunity to work with the Key Yachting team and for SLAM to sponsor the 2012 J/80 Worlds; this will certainly be a fantastic event on and off the water. I look forward enormously to sailing and socialising in the J Community throughout the 2012 season.’

At the London Boat Show in January, SLAM UK was appointed official clothing partner of Key Yachting Ltd. Key Yachting is the UK agent and distributor for the J/80 Sportsboat and for the whole range of yachts by J Boats, and this is the first time that Key Yachting has entered in to a partnership of this sort. Paul Heys, Managing Director of Key Yachting explained ‘There is a strong parallel between the design credentials of the SLAM technological clothing range and J Boats, not least in the fundamentally intelligent and performance oriented design. I’ve worn SLAM kit on the water for a number of years and it unfailingly delivers the results one expects. This new partnership is great for Key Yachting and it will also prove extremely valuable to our clients during the coming year. Competitors at the 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by SLAM have a real treat in store.’

Entries for the 2012 J/80 World Championship are rolling in at serious pace now. The online entry system at www.j80worlds2012.com is easy to use, the entry fee represents real value for money and Brittany Ferries has offered discounted pricing for J/80 teams travelling to the UK from the continent. February may be frosty but the competition in Dartmouth in June is looking hotter than ever.

There has been much chatter about the dress code for the two events which will take place at Britannia Royal Naval College during the 2012 J/80 World Championship: the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony and Prizegiving.

We have taken on board your comments and have addressed them fully in the Notice of Race which appears elsewhere on this website.

Put simply, BRNC has its own, non negotiable dress code, as follows:

Jeans or denim of any sort, training shoes (or deck shoes which look like training shoes), shorts and flip-flops or thongs are not permitted on site at BRNC

This will be the dress code for the 2012 J/80 World Championship Opening Ceremony which will be held at BRNC on Monday 11th of June.

BRNC absolutely cannot waive the rules outlined above. Anyone who does not comply with these guidelines is likely to be declined entry to the establishment.

We had originally planned a ‘Black Tie’ dress code for the 2012 J/80 World Championship Closing Ceremony and
Prizegiving at Britannia Royal Naval College on Friday 15th of June. However, we have listened to your concerns, and provided that the terms of BRNC own dress code (above) are met, I am please to say that we have relaxed the dress code for the Prizegiving Ceremony as follows:

The Notice of Race now specifies ‘Dress Code: Reefer Jackets, Lounge Suits or Black Tie’ as the dress code for the final night.

Most people have a blazer or smart ‘reefer’ style jacket and this will of course allow people to wear their sponsor’s shirt under their jackets if they wish to do so. Equally, it will allow those of us who do not expect to be on the podium to wear our party frocks if we wish.

We hope that this settles your concerns.

(London, England)- Racing J/80s on the Queen Mary Reservoir just underneath the flight paths from Heathrow Airport, Nick Cherry defended his RYA National Match Racing title this weekend for the fourth time! Eleven teams showed up to do battle, with skippers and their crews having earned their berths at the grand final through five qualifying rounds, their positions in the ISAF Match Racing world rankings, or as defending champion.

In addition to Southampton’s Cherry, the impressive line-up of teams that qualified include Skandia Team GBR and Women’s Match Racing World Champion, Lucy Macgregor; Britain’s top ISAF ranked skipper, Poole’s Mark Lees; and Mark Campbell-James who holds three RYA National Match Championship titles (2009, 2008, 2005). “The kids” also joined the party in the form of the RYA’s Youth National Match Racing Champion James French. Said young James before the regatta stared, “We are really looking forward to the finals at the Queen Sailing Club where we will have the opportunity to race against some of the best match racers in the country. We are as prepared as we can be and are looking forward to competing against a lot of the older teams at the event. Having competed in the Governor’s Cup, I hope my experience will pay dividends and that we can get a good result come the end of play on Sunday.” This group of match-racing mercenaries all got underway Friday morning (18 November) with a 22 flight round-robin which was followed by knock-out quarter-final and semi-final rounds before the Champion was to be decided in the final round on Sunday 20 November.

At the end of the day, the event was overshadowed by frustrating sailing conditions across the course of the three day regatta only allowing for a number of round robin races to take place. With an array of match racing talent in attendance at Queen Mary Sailing Club (Staines), the first day of the grand final welcomed a promising 10-12 knots allowing for nine flights to take place before poor light meant racing was abandoned mid-afternoon.

Day two of the Championships was another slow start for the 11 teams who had qualified for the event over the course of the year. With light, intermittent winds flicking left to right, the race committee managed to make it through to flight 15 by the close of play on day two (Saturday 19th November).

With no racing on the Sunday due to heavy fog (!?), Nick Cherry was awarded the prestigious title on his percentage of wins in the round robin stages. Across the two days of racing, Cherry and his crew won six out of the seven races while Mark Campbell-James won seven but lost two therefore finishing in second place with a lower percentage of wins to that of Cherry. Skandia Team GBR’s Lucy Macgregor finished the weekend in third after winning three out of her four races.

On winning the trophy for a second consecutive year and for a staggering fourth time (2011, 2010, 2007, 2006), matching that of fellow match racer Mark Campbell-James who finished runner-up for a second consecutive year, Cherry commented: “We are delighted to win! Looking at the trophy Mark CJ is the only skipper with his name on it as many times and one was a first equal – So I’m claiming the most outright wins of this trophy!

Cherry skippered his crew of Matty Adams, Connor Myant, Sam Richmond to a total of six out of seven race wins giving them an 85.7% win percentage clinching them the 2011 RYA National Match Racing title.

“One of the main things that went well was our draw in the pairing list! We ended up racing most of the lower ranked teams and none of the top seeds so have to acknowledge that was a factor. Our closest race was against BUSA ladies, skippered by my girlfriend Charlotte Lawrence which after several lead changes came down to inches at the finish. That was certainly a battle I was glad to win,” said Cherry.

“Although I haven’t done a lot of match racing this year due to my focus on the Figaro with the Artemis Offshore Academy, we have sailed as a team for a long time and were always confident we could put up a good fight. Going into the event I would have certainly put Skandia Team GBR’s Lucy Macgregor and her crew as favourites, having trained with them earlier in the year it’s obvious that their hard work and new coaching setup has made them a strong unit. I was also looking forward to a good race with Team Wight Match, having crewed for Sam in Bermuda last month it could have been a bit of a grudge match if there had been wind on Sunday!”

Cherry added: “We had some good close races this year, however I think the key to our success was always sailing in a low risk style by just doing enough to get the points on the board. Out teamwork is also a crucial factor in our success as well as our experience and of course this weekend the weather was also a big factor.”

The event this year has been a huge success and an enormous “Thank You” on behalf of everyone must go to the Royal Thames Yacht Club for all their help and support in running yet another successful RYA National Match Racing Championship. For further sailing information on the RYA National Match Racing

Entries for the 2012 J/80 World Championship can only be made online. Competitors will initially be asked for payment of just 10% of the total entry fee in order to register for the Worlds. The final balance of the £325 entry fee is not due until the 1st of May 2012. This ‘staged payment’ process is designed to ensure that skippers can register their entry for the Worlds immediately for a minimal outlay. The online entry system (operated by SailRacer) will thereby assist competing teams with their budgeting for the event and will also help to encourage entries from as wide an audience as possible.

The 2012 J/80 World Championship will commence on Saturday 9th of June 2012 and will close on the evening of Friday 15th of June 2012. In an unprecedented move, the Britannia Yacht Club has agreed to act as the Senior Hosting Club for the championship, working alongside the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the J/80 UK Class Association. The 2012 J/80 World Championship Opening Ceremony will be hosted by the historic Britannia Royal Naval College, as will the Prizegiving Dinner at the close of the regatta.

Seventy or more J/80 teams will arrive in the beautiful South Devon town of Dartmouth to compete at the 2012 J/80 World Championship. Entries are expected from the UK, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Italy, Russia and the USA, ensuring a truly International, top-level sporting event. This small armada will comprise approximately three hundred and fifty competing athletes and a total of around five hundred visitors to the port. The sailing area for the championship will be in Start Bay, just outside the harbour entrance and so easily visible from the nearby beaches and cliff tops for the enjoyment of spectators.

The website for the 2012 J/80 World Championship at www.j80worlds2012.com contains a whole host of information which will be useful to J/80 Competitors.

(Saint Cast, France)- Over seventy-one boats including three from England and one from Spain are ready to set sail in the 2011 French J/80 Nationals, hosted in Saint Cast along the Bay of Biscay by Centre Nautique Saint Cast.

What a fantastic success for the J/80 French Class! It’s extraordinary to see so many competitors sailing the final regatta of the 2011 season, a four day event taking place in the beginning of November. From Thursday the 10th of November to the 13th of November, this armada expects to have a great event on the gorgeous Saint Cast Bay. This event also determines the final results of the French J/80 Fleet season series that started back in April with the famous Spi OUEST Regatta in La Trinite Sur Mer.

The CNSC is proud to host the event, “Between J/80 and the CNSC is a long history or tradition. We acquired our first J/80 in 1999, at the time few J/80s were distributed in France, it was a bet on the future! But, it was perfect for our requirements. We needed a boat for sailing education, but also for racing, and it should be reliable, robust and modern. Twelve years later, given the number of boats racing in the Coupe de France, it was the right choice at the time! Since 1999, we have trained many crews (about fifty), and with good results: 3-times Champion of France!”

What ever the results, it’s clear the top French J/80 teams are already focused on the 2012 J/80 Worlds that will be sailed across La Manche (the English Channel) in Dartmouth, England, followed by the J/80 Worlds 2013 in France! Given the strong showing of the top French teams at this year’s 2011 J/80 Worlds in Copenhagen, Denmark, it’s apparent that the strong national rivalries between Spanish and French sailors at the top of the heap in world-class one-design and offshore events is proving to be an enormous catalyst to raise the level of their game a few more notches. Amongst the top teams competing will be multiple regatta winner Erik Brezellec on INTERFACE CONCEPT 2. For more French J/80 Nationals sailing information

Key Yachting Ltd will be exhibiting four stunning boats on the Boardwalk at the London Boat Show from the 6th to 15th of January 2012. From Italy, the beautiful new and much heralded Grand Soleil 39 makes her UK debut at the show this year. New to Europe, the impressive and elegant MJM 29z Motorboat will also be on exhibit at the London Show, and this is a motorboat that sailors absolutely must see. From J Boats there will be the International J/111, fresh from her 2011 Class wins at Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race.

The inimitable J/80 Sportsboat will also be on show before the whole fleet heads west for the J/80 World Championship in Dartmouth, Devon, in June 2012.

The J/80 Sportsboat

Sportsboat classes come and go but at the ISAF J/80 Sportsboat (now in her eighteenth year) has truly come of age. By way of celebration the J/80 Class is bringing the 2012 World Championship to Dartmouth in June.

Fast, fun and extremely exciting to sail the J/80 is a long-term winner. Strict one-design class rules for racing and a crew weight limit ensures close competition and superb, tactical racing. This is one of the reasons why the J/80 has proved so popular over the years. The fact the Worlds are coming to the UK (and to the beautiful Dartmouth to boot) is of course a major draw at the current point in time. Over 1400 J/80s have been sold worldwide and the class is still growing fast. J/80s are raced competitively by men and women of all ages and that’s another reason that the Class is so dynamic.

Delightfully easy to sail, yet capable of 18 knots on a breezy day, the J/80 has its own class for the Round the Island Race and at Cowes Week and at many other regattas around the UK.

The Grand Soleil 39

The Grand Soleil 39 is extraordinarily sleek and stylish performance cruiser-racer. She features flush decks and hatches along with recessed roller furling for the non-overlapping headsail. She has an open transom, a large, ergonomic cockpit and twin wheel steering. This is a design feature which has proven practical and popular with both cruising and racing sailors alike on other successful Grand Soleils. Below decks the GS39 offers the same interior volume as the GS40: eight berths in three cabins and the saloon, a classic ‘L’ shaped galley and an option for a second heads. She has a highly efficient hull shape designed to ensure minimum wetted surface under sail and a T-shaped keel to drive upwind speed. The high ballast ratio means that the Grand Soleil 39 can easily support her powerful sail plan whilst remaining extremely well mannered and manageable even with just a small crew.

The MJM 29z

MJM Yachts are high-tech, fuel efficient powerboats which have been designed with sailors in mind. Founded in 2002 by Bob Johnstone, who 25 years earlier had co-founded J Boats, Inc, the leading brand of performance sailboats worldwide. Bob Johnstone’s focus these key deign credentials have been carried over into MJM Yachts. MJM Yachts unique selling point is their extremely high tech design and construction. This delivers outstanding, sea-keeping performance, fuel economy and resale value. Equipped with a Volvo 300 hp diesel the MJM 29 peaks at 34 knots and yet in cruise mode she produces class-topping fuel economy.

The MJM 29z ‘Downeast’ version comes equipped with living-room style comfort for ten people in the cockpit, protected from sun or rain under a hardtop and optional bimini. Below decks you can expect satin-finished cherry woodwork, six foot headroom and living space which rivals some of her far larger contemporaries. The MJM 29z is available with two or four berths.

The J/111

Launched at the end of 2010, the 36 foot J/111 from J Boats was designed as an International One-Design race-boat. The fact that she has had such an astonishingly successful first year on race-tracks around the world (IRC and PHRF) is more than an added bonus; in fact, the J/111 has set the precedent for her market and she has been nominated as European Performance Yacht of the Year for 2011/2012.

The J/111 is a purposeful-looking, thoroughly performance-orientated boat. Overhangs are minimal, effective waterline is maximised with a vertical plumb bow and transom and all the way through the boat the emphasis is on keeping the centre of gravity low and on keeping the weight down. She is a long, slender boat with a low freeboard for her length. The Hall Spars carbon rig uses a proprietary nanotechnology to maximise stiffness for the given light weight and the powerful high aspect twin spreader rig uses a non-overlapping jib and a 130sq m kite for max downwind horsepower. Notwithstanding, she is balanced and easily driven as her third place in the 2011 double handed Fastnet Race proves.

Put simply, there is nothing like the J/111 on the market at the moment: her race results speak for themselves and she has proved herself time and time again across a variety of conditions both inshore and offshore. ISAF is due to ratify the International Class Rules in January 2012 and the International One-Design Circuit for the next three years has been published.
